Why do people prefer mulberry silk quilt?
There are three main reasons why people prefer mulberry silk:
1. Mulberry silk is better color
Silkworm silk is naturally milky white, in the production of silk quilt, there is no need to meet the needs of consumers for whiteness, the silk is bleached, so the overall look has a pearl-like luster, bright color.
Tussah silk is naturally yellow brown, visually giving people a dirty feeling. In order to meet the needs of the market, manufacturers generally will be bleached, so the overall gloss will be darker than mulberry silk.
2. Silkworm silk is more soft and close
Mulberry silk fiber is long, smooth and symmetrical, so it feels fine and smooth, and makes the quilt more intimate; The thickness of the whole tussah silk fiber is not very uniform, and the "sericin" contained in it is more, so the feel is relatively rough, and the quilt is not as close as the silkworm silk.
3. Silkworm silk is more difficult to bind
Silkworm silk is the cocoons boiled in high temperature water, and the silk is taken out by manual or machine reeling. Therefore, silkworm silk is mostly long silk, with excellent elasticity and toughness.
In addition to silk, silkworm pupa is also a very important part of tussah culture economy. In order to preserve the integrity of the cocoon, it is necessary to remove the cocoon after cutting the mouth, and then reeling the silk. Therefore, the length of tussah silk fiber is much shorter than mulberry silk, and it is easier to make a quilt than mulberry silk, and the use of silk is not comfortable.
So, tussah silk quilt is really not as good as mulberry silk quilt? Of course not! Although tussah silk is inferior to mulberry silk in the above three aspects, tussah silk also has some advantages over mulberry silk in some properties.
Tussah silk quilt, it's not that bad
1. Tussah silk quilt is more fluffy and warm
Research has proved that the volume of tussah silk quilt is about 20% larger than that of mulberry silk quilt of the same weight, which means that tussah silk has a higher degree of shagginess and a better warming effect.
2. Tussah silk is more solid and durable
Silkworm silk is reeled together with silkworm chrysalis. If the chrysalis is broken, the oil will adhere to the silk, resulting in high oil content of silkworm silk. The higher the oil content of silk, the more easily the silk will be oxidized, yellow, aging, affecting the service life of the silk quilt.
Since tussah silk has been taken out when reeling, the oil of the chrysalis will not be attached to the silk, so the oil content of tussah silk is low, not like mulberry silk is easy to oxidize, and it is more durable.
3. Tussah silk is hygroscopic and breathable
Tussah silk has certain void pores between the fibers, and the porosity is about twice that of mulberry silk. Thanks to this, under the standard conditions of temperature of 20℃ and relative humidity of 65%, the moisture regain rate of mulberry silk is about 11%, and that of Tussah silk is about 12%, and the "breathing" strength is stronger, so it is better than mulberry silk to absorb wet air.
4. Tussah silk quilt is more cost-effective
In addition to close-fitting, warm, moisture absorption and other requirements, the price of the quilt is also an important consideration. Based on the market's labor cost for mulberry silk, as well as the market's love and respect, the price of mulberry silk quilt is about twice that of tussah silk quilt under the same weight, but its fluffy, hygro-absorbent and warm preservation is better than that of mulberry silk quilt. From this point of view, tussah silk quilt is more cost-effective!
